St. Agapitus I succeeded John on May 13, 535. He was the son of a priest who had been killed by supporters of Laurentius in 502. Agapitus burned the anathema of Boniface II which condemned Dioscorus. He also took a strong position against the Arians and refused to allow them to exercise their priestly ministry. He travelled to Constantinople under the order of Theodahad in order to appease Justinian, who had planned on invading Italy to overthrow the Germanic kingdom. Agapitus used this trip to take care of ecclesiastical business and died in Constantinople on April 22, 536. His feast day is celebrated on September 20.
